Horse show season is at its best and many have signed up for multiple horse shows. Attending shows is always exciting because you will get to test your skills and the level of you and your horse. Horse shows give you a good glimpse of how you are doing and what you should improve. Also, they motivate and inspire and bring something new to your training. But, as it is time to pack for your show trip, it is important to pack and check everything - and to not forget your safety stirrups.
Pack and prepare your tack
When leaving for a horse show, you are going to need a bunch of stuff with you. In fact, it might even be the best to write up a list, as otherwise, you might forget something. Having a checklist will help you to be more efficient and remember to take everything you need.
Depending on the type of show and your discipline, you might need to pack different things with you. However, at least the following are essential to have with you, regardless of your discipline.
- Saddle and saddle pad
- Bridle (and possible martingale)
- Tendon boots for showjumpers and eventers
- Crop and spurs
- Safety stirrups
- Your own show clothes and a helmet
You might also need to pack a towel, show sheen, rubber bands, and other little things depending on the type of show and your discipline. So, go over everything you need carefully and make a comprehensive list.
Before you pack up your tack, you will need to check everything to make sure nothing is broken. Go through all the seams of the saddle and bridle, check the stirrup leathers, and make sure your boots and wraps are good to go. You should also check your show clothes and make sure they are clean. Also, do not forget to check your safety stirrups and make sure the safety mechanism works.
Finally, clean your tack with leather soap and oil to make sure they are clean and shiny.
Remember the spares
Sometimes things break and you lose things, which is why it is always good to have some spares. For instance, it may be a good idea to have a spare saddle pad, stirrup leathers, reins, and gloves. It is better to have and not need it than need it and not have it.
Update your tack and safety stirrups
